After withdrawing from a battle against the Decepticons, a brave Autobot was on a mission to take refuge to Earth. In there he met a teenager and together, they embark on a heartfelt, transformative journey of their lives.
In 2007, the first ever live action adaptation of a 90's cartoon was released — Tranformers, directed and produced by Michael Bay. It became a huge box-office success earning an approximate of $708,000,000 worldwide. Critical reviews, however, aren't particularly as high as it's monetary triumph. Over the years, a number of sequels were released, from Revenge of the Fallen in 2009 to The Last Knight in 2017, all garnering a worldwide box-office success but not so much on movie reviews.
In December 2018, a prequel and a soft reboot of the franchise was released — Bumblebee, written by Christina Hudson and directed by Travis Knight, produced by Michael Bay and others.
The film follows a battle-scarred Autobot, Bumblebee, as he fled to Earth to find a place, where he and other surviving Autobots, headed by Optimus Prime, can regroup and recuperate after a defeat at the hands of the Decepticons. Sporting his Volkswagen Beetle form, he met an 18-year old girl named Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), who salvaged him from an old junkyard and brought him home. Later, as his true origin was revealed, the two form a bond but was swiftly halted by the arrival of the Decepticons. Now, they must fought back and save planet Earth from the brink of destruction.
The Good
Bumblebee was a massive enhancement, tonally and thematically, in comparison to it's other Transformers brothers. There were a lot of breathing room in this film as it stripped out most of the exaggerated action sequences from other Transformers film and took its time to develop its characters and their interpersonal relationships. Hailee Steinfeld's performance was admirable, as she brought an emotional gravitas to the role and the way her character was written was immensely relatable than the everydude attitude of Shia Labouf's character in Transformers.
Another great choice that they made was the character models for the robots, paying homage to the original look of its Autobot source material and is totally a shout-out to fans of the franchise. I also admire that they chose great songs from the 80's, from A-Ha's Take on Me to Simple Mind's Don't You Forget About Me, for a nostalgic appeal, reminding the audience that this film took place during that period.
The Bad
While I admire the simplicity of the plot, I thought that it was too predictable in some ways. I also understand that this is a kid-friendly movie, but I thought the main characters were too much protected by plot armor. There were some scenes that, logically speaking, would've ended their lives but because of their importance, they would obviously written to survive any of that and leave logic behind. It wasn't too bad but I thought it kind of put me off in a position of disconnect.
Should You Watch It?
Bumblebee is the rebirth of a convoluted franchise — a heartfelt interpretation that made Transformersgreat and exciting again. This is a movie that would be enjoyed by both fans and non-fans alike. Overall, the movie was good, and while I have a few complaints, this is easily the best Transformers movie yet.
