"ANI (The Harvest)" Movie Review - Flawed but Admirable

A kid had to face the world in his own animated version and conquer life's biggest monster. ANI (The Harvest) It's as if a child's imagination is a safe haven, a place where the world is a playground for all the possibilities the mind could think of. And even the tight and humble space called home, situated on a busy Metro could not hinder the inquisitive headspace of a young Mithi (played by Zyren Dela Cruz), a boy who accomplishes the day by playing with his colorful toy robots that perform a vital role in his imaginary narrative. With a loving father and a mother that sings him a self-assuring lullaby, Mithi is blissfully unaware of the harsh reality. But life decided to toy with his fate, and Mithi's perfect little world is now showing its cracks, putting his vulnerability to the test and slowly depriving him of his happiness he thought would last forever. And through his eyes, the world suddenly transforms itself into a menacing monster.  Set in a lush ...

"Glorious" Review - A Glorified Tonguefest

A 50-year old woman who's having an existential crisis over her failed marriage, fizzling business career and withering sexual hustle, fell in love with a free-spirited 20-year old boy who rekindled her inner vixen.

Undercooked Mess

Glorious is one of the first iWant (formerly known as iWant TV) originals to be streamed online for free. Directed by Connie Macatuno, the film revolves around the struggles of Glory (Angel Aquino), a mother of three, and a wife of her husband (Allan Paule) who's been abusive to her and had left her for another family. During her visit to a hardware store, she met a persisent salesman Niko (Tony Labrusca) who assisted her for an item she's been looking for.

From then on, the two started communicating through text messages that later developed into dating and a sexually-driven entanglement. Their relationship grew but so does a whole stack of family drama that leads them to address their own insecurities and stay tight as a couple.

The Good

The film was set in Baguio for the most part and I thought they had a great job of showcasing the natural beauty of the place — from the busy streets of Session Road to the unbothered pine trees of Camp John Hay. The acting performance of Angel Aquino is the one that pulled the film together to show a strong woman and a responsible mother.

The Bad

Tony Labrusca's interpretation of an aggressive, self-sufficient and free-spirited boy works for some parts but is still premature to make me stick to his narrative. I thought the film didn't have a good job at giving depth to his character and he came off as a teenager who's fulfilling his lustful fantasies towards an older woman.

The story didn't mature as it think it does and the choppy edits got me questioning if it's even worth following the plot. The scenes didn't connect seamlessly into each other affecting the overall flow of the film. The score is too loud at some scenes and it totally swallowed up some talking scenes that I had to make sure I configured the right volume. I also thought that the "tongue" action sequences were way overused and it got a bit distasteful towards the end.

Should You Watch It?

Glorious is a provocative, sex-positive, May-December drama that focused too much on steam — a film that stirred so much buzz from its trailer but failed to deliver on the final product.
