"ANI (The Harvest)" Movie Review - Flawed but Admirable

A kid had to face the world in his own animated version and conquer life's biggest monster. ANI (The Harvest) It's as if a child's imagination is a safe haven, a place where the world is a playground for all the possibilities the mind could think of. And even the tight and humble space called home, situated on a busy Metro could not hinder the inquisitive headspace of a young Mithi (played by Zyren Dela Cruz), a boy who accomplishes the day by playing with his colorful toy robots that perform a vital role in his imaginary narrative. With a loving father and a mother that sings him a self-assuring lullaby, Mithi is blissfully unaware of the harsh reality. Open Your Eyes

From a 2014 novel of the same name, Bird Box presents itself as a psychological post-apocalyptic thriller, delivering with a right balance of suspense and emotional drama. Sandra Bullock did a great job at portraying her role, adding a heavier sense of melancholy to the already depressing and psychedelic tone of the film.

You can tell that the creative fine prints of Director Susanne Bier who was always captivated with stories about the duality and psychology of human being, was evident throughout the film and has helped differentiate it from other movies of the same vein (The Happening, The Mist).

The Good

The film does not rely on loud music or gimmicky jump scares to fool the audiences, instead it uses its gloomy environment and the relationships among its characters to create horror and tension.

The Bad

In comparison to this year's A Quiet Place, I thought it isn't quite good at explaining the specifics about the unseen creatures, leaving so many questions at hand by the end of the film.

Should You Watch It?

With a bulk of great movies that has released this year, this film proves itself to be one of the best. Bird Box is definitely the one to watch.
