"ANI (The Harvest)" Movie Review - Flawed but Admirable

A kid had to face the world in his own animated version and conquer life's biggest monster. ANI (The Harvest) It's as if a child's imagination is a safe haven, a place where the world is a playground for all the possibilities the mind could think of. And even the tight and humble space called home, situated on a busy Metro could not hinder the inquisitive headspace of a young Mithi (played by Zyren Dela Cruz), a boy who accomplishes the day by playing with his colorful toy robots that perform a vital role in his imaginary narrative. With a loving father and a mother that sings him a self-assuring lullaby, Mithi is blissfully unaware of the harsh reality. But life decided to toy with his fate, and Mithi's perfect little world is now showing its cracks, putting his vulnerability to the test and slowly depriving him of his happiness he thought would last forever. And through his eyes, the world suddenly transforms itself into a menacing monster.  Set in a lush ...

Ensemble of A-Listers

Directed by Mike Tuviera, Jack Em Popoy: The Puliscredibles is an action/comedy film starring Vic Sotto (Jack / Pops), Maine Mendoza (Emily) and Coco Martin (Popoy) as the comedic trio in this Metro Manila Film Festival 2018 entry.

The story revolves around Jack, a police officer who is secretly working on an unresolved case, which killed his friend and police partner, and Emily, a neophyte police officer and the adopted daughter of Jack who later met Popoy, the charming but defiantly arrogant police officer, in one of her operations.

Later on, the trio were incidentally involved in the dirty operations of a family of drug dealers. As they went further into convicting the criminals, more problems arose and a painful truth about Jack and Popoy's relationship had resurfaced.

The Good

There's no denying that when it comes to comedy films, Vic Sotto has proven his kingship and the sales of his box office hits justifies that. However, Coco Martin's charm and male chauvinism brought a grounded and emotional spice to the film. Maine Mendoza is a welcome addition to the movie as she is always naturally captivating in every scene she is in. Together, the three of them created a wonderful dynamic which felt natural and appealing.

The Bad

The movie didn't offer much to change or elevate the comedy genre. They followed a recycled formula for comedy films which for the most part works, but the scarcity of innovative lines and memorable action sequences hurt the movie's overall quality. There's nothing much to say about a film which is predictable to the core and lacks the indomitable witty punches from the heydays of comedy movies.

Should You Watch It?

Jack Em Popoy: The Puliscredibles, while flawed and recycled, is still an undeniably entertaining familial comedy flick for the masses. This is best watched with your family members, especially if they are fans of either Vic, Maine or Coco. I would go further to say that this is probably the best Vic Sotto film ever made, which is not saying much.
